Lord’s Library editors offer a quick background on the Almighty God Prayer with Scripture, examples, and commentary.

The King James Bible portrays Almighty God as a being of immense power, sovereignty, and wisdom. The term “Almighty” emphasizes his omnipotence, his ability to do all things, and his control over all things. This divine power is accompanied by omniscience, the ability to see and understand all things, as described in Job 37:16. God is also portrayed as the ruler of all things, with the power to control the course of history and the affairs of men, as emphasized in Psalm 103:19.

In addition to these attributes, the Bible emphasizes the holiness and perfection of God. The holiness of God is often described as being separate from and above all other things, such as in Isaiah 6:3, which describes how the angels in heaven cry out “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory.” The perfection of God is emphasized in Matthew 5:48, where Jesus instructs his followers to “Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.”

In this light, Lord’s Library editors thought it would be helpful to compile the most popular versions of the Almighty God Prayer for the next time you want to begin a prayer with this salutation, below:

The phrase “almighty God” appears three times in the King James Bible, usually as a title or epithet for God. In each of these examples, the phrase “almighty God” is used to emphasize God’s power, sovereignty, and authority:

  1. Genesis 17:1: “And when Abram was ninety years old and nine, the LORD appeared to Abram, and said unto him, I am the Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect.”
  2. Ezekial 10:5: “And the sound of the cherubims’ wings was heard even to the outer court, as the voice of the Almighty God when he speaketh.”
  3. Revelation 19:15: “And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.”
