Psalms 46:10 is a very well-known passage of Scripture: “Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.” One morning recently, while I was praying, this verse came to me as I was preparing to spend some time in quiet meditation. But as I contemplated this passage, I realized that there was more to it than might immediately come to one’s attention. Let us consider this verse phrase by phrase.

First is “be still.” That can be a pretty difficult instruction to follow. What exactly does being still require? I am certain you can think of several things. But ceasing all physical activity is a good place to start. Then, having privacy in a quiet place where we can sit or kneel in solitude is very conducive to being still. In addition, we must also strive to bring to a halt all distracting mental activity as well. Setting our concentration on entering the throne room of the Almighty without allowing interrupting thoughts to intrude is a necessity as well.

Psalm 46:10 Meaning

Next is to “know.” I found this quite interesting when I looked up the definition. It is such a common word that most of us feel pretty confident of its meaning. But it turns out to be more in-depth than one might think: “To be aware of through observation, inquiry, or information; develop a relationship with; spending time with them; perceiving directly.” I encourage you to take a moment, as I did, to concentrate on each of these terms, and I am pretty sure you will find that they especially bring more insight when it comes to knowing God.

It certainly did for me.

Last of all, “I am God.” As He said to Moses, “I Am that I Am” in Exodus 3:14,  He has no limits and no boundaries: “And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you.”

Think of a brilliant sunset. Think of the huge ocean expanse with its rushing waves. Think of a magnificent mountain range. He is in charge. He is in control of everything. He is everywhere at once. He is all-powerful. He is the one who performs miracles in response to our prayers and needs. He watches over each one of us individually with indescribable love, mercy, compassion, and forgiveness.

It would take pages and pages to try to put the meaning of this statement into words. But I guarantee you that if you repeat this over and over as you humble yourself before the Lord, you will feel His power surging through you when He says, “I am God.”
