Lord’s Library editors compiled this guide to the free gift of salvation verses in the Bible for your comfort and edification.

The Word of God teaches that salvation is the free gift of God, offered by grace through faith in Jesus Christ. This foundation runs throughout the New Testament, and many verses state or imply that eternal life is a gift freely given, received by faith. See Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”

This verse contrasts what we have earned—death—with what God offers freely—eternal life—through His Son. The term “gift” makes it plain: salvation is not something granted through righteous works, but something to be received by faith in the Blood Atonement.

Ephesians 2:8-9 showcases this well: “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.” Here, one can see that the grace of God is the source, and faith is the means through which we receive that gift. Importantly, the passage shows that salvation is “not of yourselves” and “not of works.” If salvation could be earned, there would be room for boasting—but God designed it so that all glory goes to Him.

See also Titus 3:5: “Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;”

Free Gift of Salvation Verses

The free gift of salvation is tied to God’s love and mercy. John 3:16 captures this concept succinctly: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” The act of God “giving” His Son is itself a gift, and everlasting life is promised to whoever believes it.

John 1:12 reinforces this idea: “But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:” Receiving Christ is a matter of believing on His name, and to those who do, the gift is sonship; adoption into God’s family.

In Romans 5:15-18, Paul repeatedly uses the word “gift” to describe the righteousness and life offered through Christ. See verses: “But not as the offence, so also is the free gift. For if through the offence of one many be dead, much more the grace of God, and the gift by grace, which is by one man, Jesus Christ, hath abounded unto many. And not as it was by one that sinned, so is the gift: for the judgment was by one to condemnation, but the free gift is of many offences unto justification. For if by one man’s offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.) Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life.”

This Scripture section presents an impressive parallel between the sin of Adam (which brought death to many) and the righteousness of Christ (which brings life as a gift to many).

Galatians 2:16 shows a continuation to this theme: “Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.”

The fact that salvation is not earned through keeping the law but is granted through faith in Jesus is seen again in Paul’s reiteration in Philippians 3:9, that his own righteousness was not sufficient: “And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith:” The righteousness of God is imputed—put to our account—by faith!

The gift of salvation also means believers are sealed with the Holy Spirit and promised eternal life. See Ephesians 1:13-14, which says: “In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.”

This sealing affirms that the believer belongs to God and that eternal life is guaranteed, not fluctuating depending on one’s behavior relative to the law.

See next 2 Corinthians 9:15 and Isaiah 55:1:

  • 2 Corinthians 9:15: “Thanks be unto God for his unspeakable gift.”
  • Isaiah 55:1: “Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters, and he that hath no money; come ye, buy, and eat; yea, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price.”

This “unspeakable gift” is beyond words because it is undeserved, unearned, and unending. It is the essence of grace. Salvation was never meant to be bought with good deeds or moral behavior—it is provided without price, as it is written.

Jesus confirmed this in John 4:10, where He told the woman at the well: “Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.” Later, in John 6:29, Jesus said: “Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent.”

We leave you with Romans 11:6: “And if by grace, then is it no more of works: otherwise grace is no more grace. But if it be of works, then is it no more grace: otherwise work is no more work.” As one can see, any attempt to mix works with grace nullifies the very nature of grace. Therefore, the believer rests securely not in self, but in Christ and His Finished Work on the Cross, where He paid the full price for sin and offered eternal life to all who would receive Him by faith.
