Lord’s Library editors assembled this short resource which offers a Parable of the Mustard Seed meaning and summary, with key Scriptures.

The Parable of the Mustard Seed uses the analogy of a mustard seed to illustrate a lesson about the growth of the Kingdom of God. In this parable, Jesus explains that the Kingdom of Heaven is like a mustard seed, which is one of the smallest seeds in the world. However, when it is sown in a field, it grows into a large and flourishing tree.

The mustard seed represents the initial and seemingly insignificant beginnings of the Kingdom of God. At the time of Jesus’ ministry, the Kingdom seemed small and unimpressive, like a tiny mustard seed. However, despite its small start, the Kingdom would grow and expand, becoming a place of refuge and shelter for many, symbolized by the birds finding nests in the branches.

The parable encourages faith in the potential for God’s work to flourish and spread, even when it appears insignificant at the outset.

The Parable of the Mustard Seed meaning can be found in Matthew 13:31-32, Mark 4:30-34, and Luke 13:18-21:

Matthew 13:31-32

“Another parable put he forth unto them, saying, The kingdom of heaven is like to a grain of mustard seed, which a man took, and sowed in his field: Which indeed is the least of all seeds: but when it is grown, it is the greatest among herbs, and becometh a tree, so that the birds of the air come and lodge in the branches thereof.”

Mark 4:30-34

“And he said, Whereunto shall we liken the kingdom of God? or with what comparison shall we compare it? It is like a grain of mustard seed, which, when it is sown in the earth, is less than all the seeds that be in the earth: But when it is sown, it groweth up, and becometh greater than all herbs, and shooteth out great branches; so that the fowls of the air may lodge under the shadow of it. And with many such parables spake he the word unto them, as they were able to hear it. But without a parable spake he not unto them: and when they were alone, he expounded all things to his disciples.”

Luke 13:18-21

“Then said he, Unto what is the kingdom of God like? and whereunto shall I resemble it? It is like a grain of mustard seed, which a man took, and cast into his garden; and it grew, and waxed a great tree; and the fowls of the air lodged in the branches of it. And again he said, Whereunto shall I liken the kingdom of God? It is like leaven, which a woman took and hid in three measures of meal, till the whole was leavened.”
