There is a special exercise every Christian can do, a word study. Take a single word from the Word of God or a concept, and see where it takes you. The depth and richness of God’s Word are an endless source of wisdom, comfort, and assurance. Recently, the word constancy popped into my daily life and meditations on God’s Word. Often, when we see words or doctrine or concepts in numerous places, it’s the Holy Spirit trying to get our attention. I’ve found this to be true for a lot of my time since I was born again, and being in tune with such a thing is a gift. Though the word does not appear in Scripture itself, it stuck in my head and made me think of similar words that are related from Scripture: faithfulness, steadfastness, endurance, patience, and immutability. For me personally, the 1828 Webster’s is the only dictionary I use in my Bible study. Webster was a saved man and a pillar of our country’s founding in its institutions and the normalization of our English at all levels of society. Modern dictionaries are made by modern men who often are not saved or even Christian. We need profitable resources to be a good Berean.
Constancy Bible Meaning
For me, constancy has two sides, which came into my mind when I read the definition. These are the two things we will talk about in this article: how constancy applies to men and the Lord of Hosts himself. Even though they are linked through the immutable nature of God himself.
Constancy in Men
Definition: “Fixedness or firmness of mind — A persevering resolution, steady, unshaken determination, especially under suffering. It also speaks to steadiness in attachments and perseverance in enterprise.”
See 1 Corinthians 15:58, Galatians 6:9, and Hebrews 10:23:
- 1 Corinthians 15:58: “Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.”
- Galatians 6:9: “And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.”
- Hebrews 10:23: “Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised;)”
Believers are to be immovable, fixed, and firm in our faith. This enables us to always be fruitful or plentiful in the work the Lord has for us. As you know that you are saved (assurance), you can say that what you do for God is not in vain or that it is a missing purpose. Doing the will of God brings the assurance and protection of God. That being the case, we should never get tired of the work, no matter what it is.
God isn’t just our salvation and redeemer; He is our sufficiency that sustains us. If we can do that, we will receive our reward in this life (blessings) and in eternity to come (gold, precious jewels, etc.). But we must not give up. All this is possible if we trust Him, if we have faith in Him, because something about God is inexhaustible.
Constancy in the Lord of Hosts
Definition: “Fixedness: a standing firm — Applied to God or His works, an unalterable continuance, or a permanent state.”
See Isaiah 14:27, Isaiah 8:13–14, and Psalm 46:7:
- Isaiah 14:27: “For the LORD of hosts hath purposed, and who shall disannul it? and his hand is stretched out, and who shall turn it back?”
- Isaiah 8:13–14: “Sanctify the LORD of hosts himself; and let him be your fear, and let him be your dread. And he shall be for a sanctuary; but for a stone of stumbling and for a rock of offence to both the houses of Israel, for a gin and for a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem.”
- Psalm 46:7: “The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah.”
Constancy, when applied to God, is not something we could ever fully understand. He is from everlasting unto everlasting, everywhere at the same time, and has seen the story of creation from the beginning to the end, then into eternity itself, where He presides. For God to be God, does He not have to be sinless? Consistent? Constant? Permanent in his character? I would say without hesitation and hand raised, “Yes, Lord, yes.”
The Lord of Hosts is on His Throne; this is Jesus Christ himself. If we, as believers, cannot rely on the unalterable and constant character and nature of God himself, what truth is there? God has a plan; the plan is His purpose. Who has the authority to alter or change His plans? Who can null and void the Almighty? If His hand moves, no one can turn it back. God sanctifies Himself in the exaltation of Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.
He is to be the one we fear and the reason we can stop sinning (speaking of believers). We should confess and repent of the sin that so easily besets us daily. As God sanctifies Himself, He is the only reason the Christian can do this. The result is that God is our sanctuary, and in Him alone we should trust. He is our refuge.
The Link to God’s Immutable Nature
See Malachi 3:6: “For I am the LORD, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed.”
LORD (YHWH) is the personal name of God. This is the name uttered to Moses from the burning bush. It states God’s immutability or His unchanging nature in regard to his character, purpose, and covenant faithfulness. He is either who He says He is, or He is not. He is. Jesus is God. May I confess it to men all the days of my life.
It is His immutable nature, His love, that enables us to be fixed and firm in our daily walk with God. This fact enables our own character and purpose to mirror God’s by faith. God is always faithful in His covenants and promises; otherwise, He wouldn’t be God. Because of His faithfulness, we can by faith have constancy in our conversation with God. What a beautiful thing to know that this is all possible by the faith of the Son of God.
See Galatians 2:20: “I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.”
